Nordic Curls Match Sprint Force Before Kickoff Weekend
Breed 2026: Nordics match sprint hamstring force, not stretch. van Dyk halved tears in 8459 athletes. Do them before Sunday flag, not after.

Wes is 44. Friday, 7:12 a.m. The TV in the kitchen is already previewing tonight's openers and Saturday's Week Zero slate. North Carolina and TCU. San Jose State at USC. His rec flag game is Sunday at 10.
He last sprinted in May. He last did a Nordic hamstring curl in never.
He tells the coffee maker the line every desk parent learns in late August.
"I'll loosen up on the field."

Chiron pinged at 6:41: Sunday flag is a late-swing test. Two Nordic sessions before kickoff. Today's dose is 8 assisted lowers after drop-off. He left it unread. The static app on his phone still thinks today is chest.
If that is your Friday, busy parent, desk spine, over-forty hamstring that remembers last September, sit with me. You do not need a new warm-up speech. You need the eccentric that already has the injury file.
Quick take - van Dyk, Behan, and Whiteley, 2019, British Journal of Sports Medicine pooled 15 studies and 8459 athletes. Programs that included the Nordic hamstring exercise had an injury risk ratio of 0.49 (95% CI 0.32 to 0.74). About 51 percent fewer hamstring injuries. Eight randomized trials still sat at 0.52. Drop the high-bias papers and it was 0.55. - Petersen, Thorborg, Nielsen, Budtz-Jørgensen, and Hölmich, 2011, American Journal of Sports Medicine: 50 Danish soccer teams, 942 players. 15 acute hamstring injuries versus 52. Overall rates 3.8 versus 13.1 per 100 player seasons (adjusted rate ratio 0.293). Recurrent: 7.1 versus 45.8. Number needed to treat for one recurrent tear: 3. - Breed, Hulm, Hickey, Timmins, Opar, Banyard, and Maniar, 2026, British Journal of Sports Medicine 60:420–428. Twenty trained adults, ten women, ten men. Nordic peak biceps femoris long head force 0.9 bodyweights, max sprint 1.0. The Romanian deadlift hit 1.6. Nordic stretch was among the lowest of the seven lifts. Hip thrust sat below walking. - Honesty: van Dyk is mostly field-sport athletes, not 44-year-old flag. Breed is a modelling study, n=20, ages 18 to 40. The PDF still got pulled from the journal this morning. That does not make Sunday optional.
The week he trusted the warm-up
Wes opens Notes. Last high-speed run: May 17. A missed extra point, a laugh, a pull that cost six weeks of pickup.
He mutters the other line his old tracker trained him to say.
"If I can still walk, the hamstring is ready."
Then he reads the methods. Eight thousand four hundred fifty-nine athletes. Not a 21-day challenge. A 2019 file asking whether one ugly lowering exercise belongs in the week.
The warm-up is not the injury program.
He writes that on a grocery receipt and sticks it under a magnet next to the flag schedule.
Chiron's 6:41 ping was this paper, in English, before the first meeting.
What the 2026 force file actually said
Not a transformation reel. A tissue-load file.
Wes squints at the Nordic column. Kneel. Partner pins your ankles. Lower your torso toward the floor as slow as you can. Catch with your hands. That is the whole circus.
Breed's lab in Melbourne put twenty people on a treadmill at walk, jog, run, and a max-effort sprint, then through seven lifts at a rating of perceived exertion of 8 out of 10. Magnetic resonance imaging, electromyography, motion capture, then a model of three hamstring muscles.
The Nordic matched sprint force on the biceps femoris long head. It did not match sprint stretch. The Romanian deadlift and the trap-bar hinge did the stretch job. The hip thrust did neither.
The Nordic matches sprint force. It does not match sprint stretch.
Wes checks last September the way a person checks a bank app. One late-swing pull after a kickoff party. Six weeks of walking like a thief. That was the stretch the curl does not cover, wearing a team shirt.
College football started last night on some campuses and starts in earnest tomorrow. Wes already knows how Sunday dies if he skips Friday. Kids to a watch party. He "loosens up" in the parking lot. First real sprint is a go-route at 10:12. That is Petersen’s control group with better snacks.
The older file that already counted the tears
van Dyk is the 51 percent number people screenshot. Petersen is the season that made the number feel expensive. Al Attar, Soomro, Sinclair, and colleagues (2017, Sports Medicine) found the same 0.490 injury rate ratio in soccer when the Nordic sat inside a prevention block.
This is not the weekend-warrior minute count. That paper asked whether two days can hold a week of activity. This one asks whether the muscle that fails in late swing has ever been loaded on purpose.
Copenhagen adduction is the groin cousin we already wrote. Different muscle. Same Friday problem: the rec cut you have not trained since May.
If you already use an if-then, write one for the hamstring. If the game is on the calendar, the lowers happen before the remote.
What LIM actually does when Sunday is on the board
Here is the part a PDF cannot do.
Chiron watches high-speed minutes and rec-sport flags, not the week you feel loose. Zero Nordics after a May layoff is not a motivational speech. It is a rewrite. Thursday dies at a tailgate? Friday becomes 8 assisted lowers in the garage, not a skipped month you "make up after Labor Day."
HERMES dropped the Breed British Journal of Sports Medicine file the morning the PDF was sitting on the journal site. The coaching does not wait for a quarterly program refresh. If your log shows flag on Sunday and no eccentric hamstring work, the next session is a Nordic plus a slow hinge, not another hip thrust to protect a green ring.
Protein per meal stays on the board. Short sleep after a late game trims the load on the bar. It does not delete the lowers. Forge keeps the log boring on purpose: Nordic reps completed, not a streak you are afraid to break.
Night-shift version is the same math on a flipped clock. Jake's 3 a.m. "I'll sprint when I'm back at 196" was this protocol with worse vending machines and hospital security shoes. He still had to load the hamstring while the last 20 pounds argued with him. The scale was not the whole file.
If three school nights keep stacking zeros, the session moves earlier, not "try harder." Sunday does not care about your intent.

Steal this before the first snap
- Write last week's high-speed minutes. Walking does not go in that column. Most people write a number they do not like.
- Protect two Nordic sessions of 8 to 12 total assisted lowers. Miss one, move it. Do not wait for a clean week or Labor Day.
- Keep the curl. Add a slow Romanian deadlift. Breed already ran the stretch experiment.
- Hip thrusts can stay. They do not replace this.
- After a short-sleep night, drop the range, keep the pattern. See the evening workout timing rule if you train late.
- If you are 44 and last September still lives in that hamstring, you are not late. You are in the week this paper was written for.
Wes peels the receipt off the fridge and writes Fri 7:50, 8 lowers on the calendar. The flag game stays on Sunday. The parking-lot warm-up stays dead.
The exercise already won. Compliance is the injury.
Your move. Not after Labor Day. The two sessions you can actually finish before kickoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Nordic hamstring curls actually prevent tears?
van Dyk, Behan, and Whiteley (2019, British Journal of Sports Medicine) pooled 15 studies and 8459 athletes. Programs that included the Nordic hamstring exercise had an injury risk ratio of 0.49, about 51 percent fewer hamstring injuries. Petersen 2011 in 942 Danish soccer players found 15 injuries versus 52 in controls.
Is a Nordic curl enough before a rec-league sprint?
Breed 2026 found Nordic peak biceps femoris long head force close to a max-effort sprint (0.9 versus 1.0 bodyweights). Stretch was much lower. Pair a Nordic with a Romanian deadlift if you want force and length. Do not treat the curl as a complete hamstring program.
How should a 44-year-old start Nordics this week?
Two sessions before Sunday flag. Band- or hand-assisted lowers, 2 sets of 4 to 6, stop one rep short of a collapse. Add a slow Romanian deadlift after. Sharp pop, bruising, or walking with a hitch is a stop, not a grind.
I already do hip thrusts. Does that cover it?
In Breed 2026 the hip thrust produced less peak hamstring force and stretch than walking. Keep it if you like it. Do not count it as hamstring injury work.
What if I already pulled this hamstring last fall?
Petersen 2011 recurrent rate was 7.1 versus 45.8 per 100 player seasons when Nordics were added. Number needed to treat to prevent one recurrent tear was 3. Start assisted. Get a clinician in the room if last year's tear still changes your gait.
